Bulky Waste
Donate your unwanted furniture and household appliances to community schemes and help people in need.
There are many community and voluntary organisations across Greater Manchester who accept donations of unwanted household item
s such as beds, sofas and washing machines. They often repair items if necessary and either sell or pass them on to people in need. Most can collect from your doorstep and the collection is usually free of charge. All you have to do is contact them. Only items in good condition or working order will be accepted at the collector’s discretion.
To find out more, visit the Community Waste Network's North West online directory to see what organisations are local to you. Alternatively, visit the Furniture Re-use Network for a local furniture re-use organisation.
Deciding whether you really need the latest gadget and being careful how you use your furniture, and electronic appliances all help to reduce the amount of waste you generate when you come to dispose of them at the end. It can also save you money, cut down on energy use and cut your carbon footprint – all without any huge changes to your lifestyle. Find out more on how your purchasing habits can reduce your carbon footprint.
You may also want to consider reparing your appliances instead of replacing them. Visit www.espares.co.uk and see if you can breath new life into your appliances.
Donating Furniture at Selected Household Waste Recycling Centres
A furniture re-use service is being piloted and is available at two Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRC), collecting a number of unwanted good quality furniture for charity (electrical items are not accepted at these re-use schemes):
- Lumns Lane Household Waste Recycling Centre in Salford
- Arkwright Street Household Waste Recycling Centre in Oldham
A re-use container has been installed on both sites with clear signage to show you where you can donate your unwanted furniture. The furniture is collected on a regular basis by furniture re-use organisations, providing good quality reusable furniture back to the local community. These are the first of their kind in Greater Manchester, and are indicative of how we are encouraging residents to see re-use as an easy and effective way to improve their environment.
