Energy Saving Facts
Manufacturing using recycled materials saves energy when compared to using virgin materials. For example making aluminium cans from recycled aluminium saves 95% of the energy required to make it from bauxite.
It is important that if you use a car to transport your recyclables you do not make special trips to recycle, instead try to combine it with a shopping trip or with a journey you were taking anyway.
Below are some examples on how recycling can save energy:
Glass
Recycling two glass bottles saves enough energy to boil water for five cups of tea
Metal
• Recycling 1kg of aluminium saves up to 6kg of bauxite, 4kg of chemical products and 14 kWh of electricity
• By recycling on aluminium can, you can save enough energy to run a television for three hours
• Recycling seven steel cans saves enough energy to power a 60-watt light bulb for 26 hours
• Every tonne of steel packaging recycled saves 75% of the energy needed to make steel from virgin material
Paper
Every tonne of paper recycled saves 3000-4000 KWh electricity (enough for an average 3 bedroom house for one year)
