Visit the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) at Longley Lane and the Manchester Education Centre
Visitors to the Longley Lane site in Sharston will see where materials collected for recycling are separated ready for reprocessing and join in with interactive activities looking at how waste is treated in Greater Manchester.
The facility has:
• An on site, purpose built classroom which can accommodate a full class
• Waste awareness displays and resources
•Welfare facilities including toilets and kitchen
Visits will incorporate a site tour of the Materials Recovery Facility where you will be able to follow the state of the art process of separating the recycling through to seeing the materials being prepared for reprocessing. Later in 2012 when construction of the Mechanical Biological Treament Facility is complete, groups will also be able to see residual waste being prepared for biological digestion and discover how this process generates electricity to help reduce our dependence on fossil fuels.
Visits are suitable for community groups and school groups with a minimum age of 7 years ( year 3 and above for school parties).
