Visits
Exciting, interactive visits are currently offered at four centres:
-
Bolton at the Thermal Recovery Facility (TRF) where you can see non-recyclable waste being burned to create energy.
-
Pilsworth in Bury at a landfill site where you can see the active landfill site and where energy is produced from the landfill gas.
-
Sharston in Manchester at the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) where you can see how mixed recycling is sorted.
-
Bredbury in Stockport at the Mechanical Biological Treatment facility where you can see how non-recyclable waste is separated, digested and energy recovered to generate electricity. There is also an In Vessel Composting facility where you can find out how garden and food waste collected from your home is turned into high quality compost in just 6 weeks.
Three of our waste education centres have been awarded the 'Learning Outside the Classroom' Quality Badge. The Badge is awarded by the Council for ‘Learning Outside the Classroom’, the Quality Badge combines learning and safety criteria into one award for all organisations that provide learning outside the classroom experiences

Site tours only
A simple tour of the facility typically lasts between 30 – 60 minutes.
Please be aware that larger groups / school parties may need to be split on site to comply with maximum allowable numbers in specific areas. In these instances, one group will typically be participating in an activity in the education centre whilst the other group are on site. The groups will then swap around.
It is expected that you will be responsible for your own transport to and from the site. Please be aware that at Pilsworth your transport will need to remain with you for at least the first hour and a half to transfer you between the education centre and the landfill site.
