WHAT HAPPENS TO WASTE AT THE RECYCLING CENTRE?

Items that we can recycle…

The vast majority of containers at our centres are dedicated to recycling. When you separate your items into the correct containers, you are ensuring they stay in use for as long as possible.

Most of the material collected is sent to our local Materials Recovery Facilities right here in Greater Manchester.

Using advanced sorting technology, we separate materials into high-quality streams. These are then baled and sent to manufacturers, often within the North West – to be turned into new packaging, construction materials, or garden products.

By recycling, you help reduce the demand for raw materials and significantly lower the carbon footprint of the items we use every day.

Items that we can’t recycle…

For items that cannot be recycled, we focus on Energy Recovery. Instead of treating non-recyclable items as a burden, we use them as a resource to generate power. General waste is processed into a specialized fuel. This is primarily transported by rail to reduce the number of HGVs on our local roads.

Renew: Giving items a second life

Renew creates value from waste to benefit Greater Manchester. It’s a joint initiative between R4GM & SUEZ UK. We take items donated at recycling centres across Greater Manchester, then we repair and renew them at our Renew Hub, ready to be resold to a new home. Browse our wide range of pre-loved items by visiting our Renew Shops or online shop.
