In-Vessel Composting
Four new enclosed In Vessel Composting (IVC) facilities will treat your garden and kitchen waste and will be located at Bredbury in Stockport, Waithlands in Rochdale, Over Hulton in Bolton and Trafford Park in Trafford.
The IVC facilities will compost kerbside collected garden and food waste, in enclosed buildings. Composting harnesses the power of naturally occurring aerobic micro-organisms that use atmospheric oxygen to generate energy and break down organic matter.
The in-vessel composting process accelerates this decomposition and usually takes between two and three weeks. It has five key stages that occur in an enclosed building:
• Pre-preparation: on arrival, the waste is inspected and the materials that cannot be composted are removed.
• Shredding: the material to be composted is then shredded in a bio-chopper to prepare it for processing.
• Composting: the shredded waste is placed in silo vessels, where temperature and oxygen levels are carefully monitored to provide a perfect environment for micro-organisms to thrive.
• Maturation: the composted material is left to mature for a period of between two and three weeks to make it suitable for use.
• Screening and storage: following maturation, the product is checked to ensure it is of a high-quality, ready for dispatch.
