Construction work is ongoing at the Reliance Street facility. A number of facilities are being built over a period of time and a phased approach is being taken to keep the old facilities open whilst the new ones are being built.

The Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) remains open, during this time, opening times are detailed below.
 

The Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) has been modernised, extended northwards and has had its layout redesigned. These improvements create a modern, split-level HWRC with a more convenient layout and better traffic management to eliminate queuing off-site and to separate access for operational vehicles and private cars which will increase safety. For opening times, see below.

A New Mechanical Biological Treatment Facility for the future 

A new Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT) facility is being built at this site. The MBT facility will comprise the existing Materials Recovery Facility plus a new Anaerobic Digestion (AD) unit. It will be capable of processing 100,000 tonnes of waste each year. The AD unit will process organic material in enclosed tanks to produce gases, which will be harnessed to generate renewable power, and a compost-like material. The new Anaerobic Digester will be built on the east of the site, alongside the existing processing facility. Working in tandem, these facilities will constitute a new MBT plant.  Construction is on going and  the facility is due to be built by June 2010, with a further 6 months of testing, with the facility due to be completely finished in Dec 2010.
