Construction work is on-going at the Arkwright Street facility. A number of facilities are being built over a period of time and a phased approach is being taken to keep the old facilities open whilst the new ones are being built.

The Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) remains open during this time. Opening times are detailed below.
 

A new Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) opened in October 2009. The HWRC is a split-level facility- creating a modernised centre that meets the recycling needs of the surrounding area by providing, a more convenient site layout; better traffic management to eliminate queuing off-site; and separate access for operational vehicles and private cars, to increase safety. These improvements will reduce waiting times and provide a more comprehensive recycling service for all local residents.

NEW Re-use service

Arkwright Street HWRC now accepts donations of unwanted furniture for re-use. This is a 6 month pilot delivered in partnership with Bulky Bob's to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of such a scheme. So if you are buying new furniture or thinking of having a spring clean then why not donate your unwanted items on site. A Transfer Loading Station (TLS) will be built on land to the north of the site, to replace the current, dated facility. The TLS will receive and sort recyclable waste from local collections, ready to be sent on for reprocessing – helping to support Oldham's kerbside recycling scheme.

A Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT) facility consisting of a Mechanical Sorting Plant will be built on land occupied by current operations. The MBT will help Greater Manchester divert even more waste from landfill. Construction is ongoing and the facility is due to be built by mid 2011, followed by a further 6 months of testing. The facility is due to be completed and fully operational in early 2012.
