What Can I Recycle And Where?
What Happens to my Recycling?

Bredbury Parkway, Stockport

updated 20/06/10

Construction work is on-going at the Bredbury parkway facility. A number of facilities are being built over a period of time and a phased approach is being taken to keep the old facilities open whilst the new ones are being built.

The Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) remains open, during this time. Opening times are detailed below.

A new Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) is under construction. The Facility will be split-level - creating a modernised centre that will meet the recycling needs of the surrounding area by providing, a more convenient site layout; better traffic management to eliminate queuing off-site; and separate access for operational vehicles and private cars, to increase safety. These improvements will reduce waiting times and provide a more comprehensive recycling service for all local residents.

The facility is due to be completed by August 2010.

The handling and processing facilities being constructed at Bredbury Parkway have three sections:

A Transfer Loading Station will receive and sort recyclable waste from local collections, ready to be sent on for reprocessing – helping to support Stockport’s kerbside recycling scheme. Construction is not due to start on this facility until September 2010.

A Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT) facility consisting of a Mechanical Sorting Plant and Anaerobic Digester  is being built on land occupied by previous operations. The MBT will help Greater Manchester generate green energy and divert even more waste from landfill. Construction is ongoing and the facility is due to be completed by mid 2011, with a further 6 months of testing. The facility due to be operational in early 2012.

An In Vessel Composting (IVC) facility will process kitchen and garden waste collected from across area into compost for use in landscaping, farming and horticulture. The IVC will be capable of treating approximately 50,000 tonnes of kerbside collected kitchen and garden waste (biowaste) a year. Construction is almost complete, and the facility is due to be compete by mid summer 2010, with a further 6 months of testing. The facility is due to be completely finished and operational in later 2010.
