Construction work is on-going at the Longley Lane facility. A number of facilities are being built over a period of time and a phased approach is being taken to keep the old facilities open whilst the new ones are being built.
The upgraded Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) remains open during this time. The opening times can be found below.
The new Green Waste Shredding facility (GWS) is now complete. The purpose-built structure is on the north-east boundary of the site.
A new Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) has been built on the site to process and sort all of Greater Manchester’s mixed recycling (glass, cans and plastic bottles).The facility has been under construction since early April 2009 and is currently undergoing its testing and commissioning process.
A new and enlarged Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) has replaced the previous, dated facility. Ground preparations began in January 2010 and the facility was completed and opened up to the public in May 2010.
A new Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT) facility is currently being fitted out, consisting of a Mechanical Sorting Plant and Anaerobic Digestion (AD) facility. This is located on the north of the site, on the land currently occupied by the existing processing facility. The existing waste handling facilities have been relocated and improved. Works are ongoing and are due to be finished by Summer 2010. After this testing and commissioning will take place for a further 6 months before the facility will be completely finished.
The Manchester City Council vehicle depot, office and welfare building have been relocated to the far north east corner of the site − to provide better access and a more efficient use of space.
Relocating these existing facilities will improve the overall efficiency of the Longley Lane site. A new office and Waste Education Centre will also be built, to promote awareness of waste management to young people and other interested visitors.
