Our Waste Solution
Across Greater Manchester your waste will be treated and processed in a revolutionary way.
1.1 million tonnes of waste will be handled each year and we will be building on the past successes of Greater Manchester which has seen a rise from 7% recycling in 2002/03 to over 30% today.
This new way of treating your waste will ensure an impressive recycling rate of at least 50% by 2015, and will also divert more than 75% of waste away from landfill. It will provide a world class solution for Greater Manchester’s household waste, serving approximately 973,000 households (AGMA, 2009) and a resident population of over 2.27 million.

Linking in with the Waste Hierachy
As part of our waste solution, we are committed to changing the way that we deal with your waste.
Through our diverse and varied communications campaigns we will support and promote 'Waste Prevention' initiatives to help you reduce your waste in the first place.
We will then, where ever feasible, encourage and support initiatives to help you re-use your waste by facilitating projects that can find a new home for the items that you no longer need.
Via our improved collection and treatment facilities everything that comes to us that can be recycled or composted will be.
For everything that is left over we will recover the energy from it.
As a last and final option and after all the previous steps have been explored less than 25% of your waste will go to landfill.
