Re-Use & Recycling Credits - Community groups cashing in on waste!
The Recycling Credits Scheme provides a cash incentive to recycle waste, but only Textiles, Paper and Cardboard are eligible for payment. At present all other materials of waste that would otherwise be put in a household bin are currently being reviewed.
GMWDA pay these because it means we will not have to dispose of that waste ourselves. District Councils or GMWDA do not have to pay these Credits, they are "discretionary" payments, each Council and Disposal Authority makes its own decision.
There are two types of credit payable: -
Collection Credits: 70p per tonne is payable by your District Council because they will not have to collect the waste that you will be collecting.
Disposal Credits: £56.50 per tonne for the year starting on 1st April 2009 this is reviewed annually.
GMWDA will pay Disposal Credits to approved third parties with the main criteria being these parties are non-profit making organisations. This includes schools, voluntary groups, community groups and charities. The Bolton, Manchester, Bury, Salford, Stockport and Tameside District Councils will pay Collection Credits. If your scheme duplicates an existing scheme then we might not be able to pay you Credits.
First, consider your scheme: -
- Does your scheme cover normal waste from houses in the Greater Manchester Area? (Not shops, offices etc. or outside of Greater Manchester).
- Will you have at least 4 tonnes every 6 months?
- Do you have or can you get weighbridge receipts?
- If you answer ’yes’ to these questions, ask us for an application form, complete it and send it back.
What will happen next?
- We look at your scheme and normally visit you to talk about it.
- We send your application to your District Council for their comments.
If 1 & 2 are satisfactory, we will register your scheme and send you a certificate, with claim forms.
You complete the claim forms, attach the original weighbridge receipts (not copies) and send them to us. We process your claim and send you the money (including Collection Credits where applicable).
