Bike Reuse and Recycling Project
Recycle your unwanted bike during bike week and beyond...
If you have a bike that you no longer use or want there are plenty of people who do. Across Greater Manchester there are community and youth groups who are crying out for your unwanted adults and children’s bikes to repair, refurbish and reuse.
During bike week (19-27th June 2010) the Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority (GMWDA) is launching a campaign to raise public awareness of the alternatives to throwing your bike away as scrap metal. We are working with district to get this message across to the public.
In order to encourage people to think about donating their unwanted bike to a reuse project GMWDA is sponsoring a number of bike donation events in Bury and Salford. We will also be giving away freebies such as hi-vis tabards and water bottles at bike week events in Greater Manchester.

At a the bike donation events you can bring any unwanted bike that you have, even if you think your bike is past it, there are plenty of groups willing to try and get them working. These refurbished bikes are given to young people and community groups or sold cheaply to local people. As a last resort bikes that cannot be repaired will be stripped of their useable parts and the rest of it will have a scrap metal value.
Beyond bike week
Our campaign will continue after bike week where we will be looking to work with more community and youth groups and councils to promote bike reuse through for example schools cycle training, cycling clubs and local cycling events. If the bike donations events work we will set then up in more districts and we will be featuring different bike projects on the website over the next few months so you will know what is happening to all the bikes you donate, so come back and have a look.
If you are involved with a community project that repairs and reuses bikes and you want your project to be added to our directory please send an email to gmwda@gmwda.gov.uk or call us on 0161 770 1700.
