One Year On - The Greater Manchester Story

Greater Manchester: One Year On.

With the Greater Manchester PFI contract, the largest of its type in Europe, reaching the one year milestone, it’s time to reflect on what has been achieved over the last twelve months, and look at how we will develop Greater Manchester’s network of modern recycling and treatment facilities in the future.

Over the last 12 months the construction programme has seen significant progress; from the total of 42 facilities across the network, a sizeable 22 facilities are now complete with a further 15 under construction by Costain.

Technologies

The key technology solutions, operated by Viridor Waste (Greater Manchester) Ltd,  are now begining to come on line with the In-Vessel-Composting (IVC) facility at Waithlands in Rochdale now fully operational, producing a quality compost product and the Materials Recovery Facility at Longley Lane (MRF) currently undergoing its commissioning testing in order to achieve its completion status by early Summer 2010.

The five Mechanical Biological Treatment Facilities (MBT), four with Anaerobic Digestion (AD), are also on track and making significant progress.

Reliance Street in North Manchester is the first of these facilities due to be constructed by mid Summer 2010. Once built, the facility will undergo a 6 month testing programme to ensure that  it complies with output quality, performance criteria and legislation.

Household Waste Recycling Centres

The Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) redevelopment programme is also progressing at speed with a total 18 HWRCs now completed under the redevelopment programme.

Two new facilities, Hurstwood Court in Bolton and Boysnope Wharf in Salford, are progressing on schedule and will be key local facilities across the network. In addition a further two key facilities have recently been completed at Bredbury Parkway in Stockport and Sinderland Road in Trafford and opened to local residents. Satisfaction surveys recently carried out reveal that 99.7% of users are either very satisfied or satisfied with the HWRCs confirming that users rate the new or upgraded facilities very highly.

Waste Education Centres Get Top Marks for Educational Visits by being awarded the ‘Learning Outside the Classroom’ Quality Badge.

The Quality Badge combines learning and safety criteria into one award for all organisations that provide learning outside the classroom experiences.

Being awarded the Quality Badge is a real coup for all the staff at VLGM as it shows that we offer young people the type of high quality learning experiences they really benefit from. We're thrilled to get official recognition for our efforts and we look forward to welcoming even more schools and community groups from Greater Manchester to our Waste Education Centres in the future. The centre at Bolton allows groups to tour the Thermal Recovery Site, whilst in Bury, groups get the opportunity to visit a working landfill site.
