This is a 6 month pilot delivered in partnership with Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority and CT New to You to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of such a scheme. So if you are updating your furniture or thinking of having a spring clean then why not donate your unwanted items. All donated furniture at Lumns Lane is collected by CT New to You, a charity based in Salford committed to supporting the community. By donating your furniture you will: Donating second – hand goods promotes a sustainable lifestyle and there are many unwanted items accepted for donation including tables, chairs and sofas. Peter Heginbotham, Chairman at VLGM said: Councillor Neil Swannick, Chair of GMWDA said: “We are delighted with the reuse scheme, which is an example of our commitment to increasing the rates of re-use, diverting waste from landfill and benefiting the community.” Jo Sugden, CT New to You project coordinator added “CT New to You is very excited to be involved in this partnership. Not only is it helping reduce waste and landfill in Salford, furniture donated for reuse will enable people on low income to furnish their homes for very little cost”. Councillor Ben Alexander, Lead Member at GMWDA for Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRC) commented: "I am delighted that the recent survey carried out at the Lumns Lane showed a high level of customer satisfaction. I know there is a strong determination right across the whole of the GMWDA to deliver household recycling, constantly improve service and respond to what residents want - which is more reuse, made easier.” Councillor Murphy, GMWDA Member for Salford said: “I am thrilled with this project, which will provide the local community in Salford with access to affordable goods in quality condition, as well as giving a local charity the chance to carry out fantastic work. There is a strong commitment to reducing waste in Salford and the project is evidence of excellent partnership working.” All of our waste in Greater Manchester needs disposing of and the best way to deal with it is to reduce the amount we produce in the first place. Every tonne of re-used furniture diverted away from landfill saves 2.7 tonnes of CO2 being emitted, so it is important that we all do our bit. There are lots of simple actions we can all take to make a real difference including re-using items as many times as possible before thinking about recycling or disposal. As a result, if this pilot scheme is successful, VLGM will look at expanding the scheme to a number of other HWRCs across Greater Manchester.
