Bolton Cubs go for Global Challenge

Cubs from the 8th Bolton East Scout Group recently visited the Waste Experience in Bolton and had an exciting, fun- packed outing.

Cub Luke Couperthwaite from the 8th Bolton East Scout Group
visited Viridor Laing (Greater Manchester) Ltd’s (VLGM) Waste Experience Education Centre in Bolton on Tuesday 9th February 2010. Luke who had visited the centre previously with his dad as part of his project to obtain his Global Challenge Badge had enjoyed the visit so much he asked his group leader to organise a trip for his fellow cubs.

The cubs; their leaders and the Area Assistant District Commissioner for Cub Scouts , Margret Lancaster visited VLGMs Waste Experience to support the group in achieving their Global Challenge Badge’s: to learn about waste and recycling, consider how they can reduce their waste, and understand and see at first hand the different technologies we use to treat their waste.

As part of the visit the group toured the Thermal Recovery Facility next door to the Education Centre and discovered; how electricity is made from our waste; how the furnace and emissions are monitored and how the gases produced are cleaned and controlled. The group also had an interactive session by taking part in activities looking at the importance of getting their recycling right and had a chance to visit the Centre’s newly refurbished exhibition.

John Woolfenden one of the Cubs Leaders said it was a “very interesting tour of the facility and talk regarding recycling”. It is hoped that this visit will help other cubs working towards their Global Challenge badge come up with ideas for similar projects.

Peter Heginbotham, Chairman for VLGM, said “We are pleased to be able to offer our education package to the community of Greater Manchester and encourage both community groups and schools to get involved and book a visit”

There are two visitor centres that already exist – one in Bolton at the Thermal Recovery Facility and one in Bury at a Landfill Site.

As part of Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority’s (GMWDA’s) 25 year waste and recycling Private Finance Initiative (PFI) contract VLGM will also be building two new visitor centres at other sites within Greater Manchester.

VLGM welcome all types of community, residents and school groups based within the Greater Manchester region; the minimum age for visitors is 7 years old.

Visits are free of charge, so take advantage and contact us for further information and to make a booking.
