Works Start on a New Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) to serve residents of South Manchester.

Manchester City Council, Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority (GMWDA) and their recycling and waste contractor Viridor Laing (Greater Manchester) Ltd (VLGM) have started works on a new Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) in Sharston, Manchester

The Longley Lane site received planning permission from Manchester City Council in December 2007 to redevelop the whole site into a new Resource Recovery Centre, as well as a new HWRC which will allow residents to recycle household waste, including bulky items, in a modern easy to use facility. On the south side of the site a new Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), a new Green Waste Shredding (GWS) facility and new amenity buildings are also being developed. The existing processing plant is also being redeveloped in to a Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT) Facility, with Anaerobic Digestion which will generate renewable energy from our waste.

The new HWRC facility is a community facility and will allow the City of Manchester to become more self-sufficient in managing its municipal waste.

Councillor Neil Swannick Chair of GMWDA said; “This new HWRC forms part of a network of facilities across the Greater Manchester area and will reduce the amount of waste we send to landfill, reflecting residents’ desires to recycle more. The HWRC at Longley Lane has specifically been designed to allow for at least 60% recycling of all the household waste taken into the site.”

Users of the HWRC, which is due to be completed by late summer 2010, will experience a modern and convenient facility with easy access to the recycling containers. The split-level facility will provide a convenient layout with separate access for operational vehicles and private cars to increase the safety of all site users. Access to the HWRC will be via a redeveloped site entrance off Longley Lane. The access road into the site has been designed to minimise congestion on and off site, with a long and double entrance slip road within the site.

Peter Heginbotham, Chairman of VLGM, the company responsible for the development, said “This new facility with its modern and forward thinking layout will make it easier for residents to segregate and recycle more of their waste in a simple to use and safe environment.”
