Works Start on a New Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) to serve residents of Bolton.

Bolton Council, Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority (GMWDA) and their recycling and waste contractor Viridor Laing (Greater Manchester) Ltd (VLGM) have started works on a new HWRC in Bolton at Hurstwood Court.

The Hurstwood Court site received planning permission from Bolton Council in April 2009, to be redeveloped into a new HWRC which will allow residents to recycle household waste including bulky items in a modern easy to use facility. Previously, this piece of land has been occupied by an industrial unit and is surrounded by other industrial premises on Raikes Lane Industrial Estate. Once completed the new facility will replace the existing HWRC in Raikes Lane, and the old HWRC site will be redeveloped as a waste transfer station, to provide a service for Bolton Council’s collection vehicles.

Councillor Hanif Darvesh from GMWDA and Bolton Council said; “This new HWRC forms part of a network of facilities across the Greater Manchester region and will reduce the amount of waste we send to landfill, reflecting residents desires to recycle more. The HWRC at Hurstwood Court has specifically been designed to allow for at least 60% recycling of all the household waste taken into the site.”

Councillor Neil Swannick Chair of GMWDA said; “This new facility is a community facility and will allow the district of Bolton to become more self sufficient in managing its municipal waste by providing a wider range of segregated recycling containers so users can recycle more things more often.

Users of the HWRC, which is due to be completed by late summer 2010, will experience a modern and convenient facility with easy access to the recycling containers. The split-level facility will provide a convenient layout with separate access for operational vehicles and private cars to increase the safety of all site users. Access to the HWRC will be via Hurstwood Court which is linked to the B6536 and the A666. The access road into the site has been designed to minimise congestion on and off site, with a long and double entrance slip road within the site.

Peter Heginbotham, Chairman of VLGM, the company responsible for the development, said “This new facility with its modern and forward thinking layout will make it easier for residents to segregate and recycle more of their waste in a simple to use and safe environment.”
