About Us

Across Greater Manchester there is a strong partnership of local authorities and private companies working together to manage your waste.

Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority (GMWDA) is a statutory authority that has the responsibilityof managing the disposal of your waste. The GMWDA works closely with private companies to run waste processing facilities which receive, sort, process and treat both general household and recycling waste.

The GMWDA serves over 958,000 households and a resident population of over 2.18 million, it processes nearly 1.4 million tonnes of household waste each year.

The GMWDA also works closely with the districts of: Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport, Tameside and Trafford (Wigan district council is a statutory waste disposal authority in its own right and is represented on the Authority for administrative purposes only). These district councils have the responsibility of providing your home with a waste collection service. These services will vary from area to area but will generally include separate collections for recycling waste and household waste.

For more information on the services provided to your home, reporting missed collections, or obtaining extra containers, visit your district council webpages by clicking on district names listed above.
